About the event

This month we'll talk about the challenges facing caregivers, at end-of-life, and anticipatory grief. Anticipatory grief is the normal mourning process that occurs when your loved one is still living and you are expecting their death. In end-of-life care, anticipatory grief often coincides with the burdens of caregiving, as those who are closest to the dying person, and will be most impacted by their death, are also often those who are most involved in their day-to-day care. Family caregivers bear a significant and growing burden of care, in the US, where many people wish to die at home, and professional home care is becoming increasingly inaccessible. The physical and emotional strain puts caregivers themselves at significantly increased risk for illness and even premature death.

Wake’s monthly Community Deathcare Meeting is open to anyone working in end-of-life care in the New Orleans area, as a volunteer or professionally, and to anyone interested in doing that work. It’s an opportunity to meet each other, to share resources, and to explore how we can support each other in meeting the needs of our community.
