About the event

A Death Cafe is a social gathering of people, often strangers from many walks of life, organized for the purpose of discussing death, without any formal agenda or commercial pressures. Anyone can attend and chat informally about different aspects of death, over tea and cake, with a goal of making the subject less taboo and scary. Death Cafes were pioneered by Jon Underwood in the U.K., based on the work of Swiss Sociologist Bernard Cretaz. First held in the U.S. by Lizzy Miles, they are now popular all over the world.

Death Cafe is free and open to the public so come on by. Parking is available and the building entrance is through the glass double doors at the back of the front parking lot. This event will be facilitated by Liz Dunnebacke.

The last half hour of Death Cafe includes a legal clinic, where you can learn about and pick up Living Will (Declaration Concerning Self-Sustaining Procedures) and/or Funeral and Disposition of Remains Directive forms, fill them out and have them notarized for free by Wake Program Manager and Civil Law Notary Laurie Dietrich (she/her).

Liz Dunnebacke (she/her) - Liz Dunnebacke is the Executive Director of Wake and a community deathcare provider, working to reduce barriers to access to meaningful, affordable, sustainable deathcare in the U.S. and abroad.
